The Steed (formerly named Mustang) is a now-retired classic muscle car in Jailbreak.

Overview

Based on a 1960s Ford Mustang, this car was released alongside the Stallion and Monster Truck in the Monster Truck Update of September 30, 2017. It was the most affordable and accessible of the three, costing Cash Icon50,000 and spawning beside the Town Gun Shop. Unfortunately, its early history was dampened by lackluster performance and overly bouncy suspension on low framerates.

In February 2020, it was announced that the Steed and Mighty would be retired from Jailbreak in the upcoming March update[1], removing their spawn points and blocking future purchases. The Brulee was also added to this lineup in a later announcement[2], and all three went on to become the first wave of retired classic vehicles on March 8, 2020. To honor their new exclusivity, they were initially given new license plate text (the Steed's being "CLASSIC") and unique pinstripe decals that would display on top of textures. These traits were reverted over time and eventually replaced by more subtle "CLASSIC" decals.

After its removal from the map, the vacant Gun Shop spawn was eventually replaced by the Challenger in the first 5 Days of Vehicles update event of 2020. Two years later, a new edition of the same event added a modern Mustang (the Shell Mark-5) to the Crater City Gun Shop. Both are seen as successors to the Steed, but are notably faster and more expensive.

The Steed continued to receive changes in the years following its retirement. Primarily, it was given the basic treatment of cosmetic standard updates and support for new customization features. On April 8, 2021, the vehicle was caught in a series of renames to lessen the risk of copyright strikes from car brands, getting changed from "Mustang" to "Steed" in Miscellaneous Update 103. Though it doesn't start with the same letter, the horse meaning keeps it closely related to real Mustangs and their logo.

More recent updates have been kinder to the Steed: In July 2022, it received a long-overdue speed buff as part of a large batch of vehicle retunes by ShadowSamurai720. It also benefitted heavily from the fix of unstable suspension in November 2023[3], having been one of the bounciest cars on low framerates. Yet another performance retune was made in May 2025, increasing power while lowering traction to create a more authentic "muscle car" driving feel. With many of its longstanding issues solved, the Steed has become a solid way to experience Jailbreak nostalgia. Players who did not purchase the car before retirement can still obtain it through trading.

Performance Review

The then-called Mustang had a poor value prospect on release, offering only marginally better acceleration and top speed compared to the free Camaro. It also came with the downside of extra bouncy suspension on weak devices (even worse than average), ultimately leaving little purchase justification apart from the convenient spawn point. The car remained this way until being retired, but technically wasn't far behind its competition at the time; virtually every car under Cash Icon100,000 felt identical to a Camaro, with abysmal performance and mere ~123 MPH top speeds. Apart from bikes, the Cash Icon16,000 Model 3 was among the only exceptions to this, packing vastly better acceleration and a solid max of 140 MPH, unchanged to this day. All of these factors led to the original Mustang being an impractical and unpopular pick when it was originally available.

However, long after retirement, the Steed was finally treated to a buff in July 2022. Top speed (which was formerly hard to maintain due to slowdown in final gear) increased to an even 150. Acceleration also improved, and in the new landscape of retuned competitors, it managed to hold its own in a balanced state between the cheaper accelaration-focused Mighty and the faster but pricier Posh. More recently, the May 2025 update granted it another speed buff: this time to 165 MPH with further-enhanced acceleration, allowing it to completely outdo several cheap competitors in a straight line. However, the key drawback in this retune was a nerf to traction, making it more fun to drift but prone to losing speed in turns. Compared to the muscle cars on-sale today, the Steed is certainly not as polarized as the Challenger; a car of high speed but horrible maneuverability— but it is completely outdone by its modern Mustang relative the Shell Mark-5.

Overall, the Steed offers solid performance relative to its original price point, and isn't difficult to obtain via Trading due to how cheap it was. It will undoubtedly struggle against higher-end supercars and the like, but is far from the irredeemable vehicle it once was, especially after suspension bounce issues were fixed in 2023. Like many cars in Jailbreak, it can be fun and somewhat viable to use in the hands of a good driver.

Appearance and Customization

As one of the original 2017 Jailbreak cars, the Steed has a low-poly model that's characterized by its blocky appearance. It appears to be based on the 1967 Shelby GT500, a high-performance variant of the Ford Mustang. Despite overall simplification, it is mostly faithful to this design— most notably including the 1967-specific center grille headlamps. One key deviation is the brakelights, which replace the real car's solid lines with triple squares on each side; a traditional hallmark of Mustang styling in other models.

Customization is basic: it has no interior or secondary colors, but has been updated to support the modern tire, horn, and drift categories. The infamous upside-down textures have also been fixed in recent times.
